Convective events happen within varied environmental conditions, which can often be split into two distinct regimes. Quantifying the separation between these regimes has only occurred since the mid 2000s but has given us great understanding of how convection (and potential flash flood situations) behave in models. For my PhD entitled: "Environmental Controls on Convective-Scale Error Growth", supervised by Bob Plant, Sue Gray, Humphrey Lean (MetOffice@Reading) and George Craig (LMU, Munich), I am to consider these regimes over the United Kingdom, and using convection-permitting ensemble forecasts consider the perturbation growth to help understand why errors may grow differently within the two regimes.
