JCMM INTERNAL REPORT NO.106
The objective analysis of dropsonde data from FASTEX
by R M Forbes, S A Clough, M A G Dixon, A K Macallan and N M Roberts

This report documents the objective analysis method used to form gridded cross-sections from dropsonde data collected during the Fronts and Atlantic Storm Track Experiment (FASTEX). The processing of the dropsonde data is described and the characteristics of the analysis method and sensitivities to parameter variations are investigated. In particular the use of an isentropic vertical coordinate rather than a pressure coordinate is found to improve the analyses. With the available data the objective analysis of dropsonde data is able to provide spatially coherent fields with useful information on mesoscale structures.
