Rearrangement of functions with applications to meteorology and ideal fluid flow

R J Douglas

(University of Reading)

Abstract

A review of the properties of rearrangements of scalar and vector valued functions is presented. Applications of this theory to

  1. steady vortices in ideal fluid flow,
  2. decomposition of weather forecast error into a combination of displacement error and qualitative features error, and
  3. a model for large scale motions of the atmosphere and ocean are described.
