Applications should be sent to the Faculty of Science Postgraduate Office (email: scipg@rdg.ac.uk):

    United Kingdom

Note that applications without a completed application form will not be accepted. Do not send in CVs without completed applications: they will not be considered.

It would be helpful if you could indicate in your application form which of the topics interests you and also put your choices in some approximate order of interest. Such a choice does not exclude you from choosing another topic after discussions with us

Checklist for applications:

  • Completed application form
  • Note that for our PhD programme we do not require a project description
  • Transcript of subjects and grades from your first degree and, if applicable, postgraduate degree
  • Two academic references

We welcome applications throughout the year.

EU (non-UK) candidates

Candidates are required to have a high level university degree in physics, mathematics, or a closely related physical or environmental science, equivalent to a first class or upper second class UK honours degree.

In addition to satisfying academic conditions candidates must show the necessary levels of English proficiency, as described on the University's webpage for international students. Enquiries about this should be directed to the Faculty of Science Office.

EU (non-UK) candidates are only eligible for fully funded positions if they have lived in the UK for at least the past three years. If this is the case follow the application instructions for UK candidates and ignore the rest of this section.

If you have not lived in the UK for at least the past three years then you may apply for a Fee-Only Award, described on the Funding page, but will have to provide your own living costs. To apply for a fee-only award, write a separate request (200 words maximum) explaining why you need this funding. Otherwise you will need to obtain external funding for both fees and maintenance. Please contact us if you have any queries.

Furthermore you need to produce a completed application. Please use this application form to apply for a position on our PhD Programme. Include a cover letter, a transcript of grades achieved in your degree, and two academic references (the application form includes a form to be completed by the academic referees). In addition to satisfying academic conditions candidates must show the necessary levels of English proficiency, as described on the University's webpage for international students. Enquiries about this should be directed to the Faculty of Science Office.

Non-EU candidates may be eligible for funded positions if they have an established relevant connection with the UK. A relevant connection constitutes being resident in the UK for the past three years, not for the sole prupose of education, and not being subject to any restriction on the period for which he/she may stay in the UK. If you believe you are in this category contact us for further advice. Note that these are guidelines; cases are decided by the funding bodies on an individual basis.

If you have no relevant connection with the UK (as defined above) then you will normally have to provide your own funding for both fees and maintenance (living costs). You may apply for a Partial-Fee Award, described on the Funding page, which will effectively reduce the fees you pay from the international rate to the home rate. To apply for a partial-fee award, write a separate request (200 words maximum) explaining why you need this funding. If you need further advice on this, please contact us.
