This looks more like another planet than Lanzarote. This is a postcard showing a view of the Timanfaya National Volcanic Park on the western side of Lanzarote. It is a spectacular place although I have my doubts about the coloring of the sky in this image!

The only way to get amongst the volcanoes is via coach along the "Route of the Volcanoes". The day we went the entire park was shrouded in mist and cloud which made it very atmospheric. The mist did lift every now and then to reveal views of many craters and massive lava fields.

The eruption that formed this crater buried a small village in the 18th century.

Lava wall.

A tourist attraction at the Timanfaya visitors centre. Brushwood is placed into an opening and bursts into flame within 30 seconds or so.

Another tourist attraction. Tubes have been sunk into the Earth. A bucket of water is poured down them and 3 seconds later it re-emerges as a jet of steam. I'm amazed I actually managed to catch one on film to be honest!

Sea water trapped in the lava quickly evaporates to leave salt deposits.
