Conceptual diagrams
The conceptual diagrams show composites of upper- and lower-level
fields from the extratropical cyclone atlas that have been combined
to create diagrams of extratropical cyclone structure and evolution
which are comparable to the conceptual models.
- Surface cyclone: Shows the evolution of
the low-level fields during extratropical cyclone development and
decay stages.
- Baroclinic instability: Shows the
relative evolution of the both upper- and lower-level fields during
extratropical cyclone development and decay stages.
- Conveyor belt: Illustrates air flows
such asthe warm and cold conveyor belts and dry intrusion at the most
intense stage of extratropical cyclone development.
- Jet streak: Shows the evolution of
upper-level fields associated with the jet stream.
