Ian James' Jobs
I have lots of jobs. This list covers the main ones which people may need to
speak to me about.
-
I deal with admissions to Higher Degree by Research in the Department of
Meteorology, and I also deal with administration connected with Higher Degree
students upto and including their final viva examinations.
-
I am Secretary to the New Building Committee. This involves liasing between
the Department and the Buildings Office about the design and specification
of our new building, which is due to be handed over to the University at the
beginning of November 1996. The New Building Committee is also responsible
for planning the move and the purchase of new furniture.
-
I am a member of the Council of the
Royal Meteorological Society, and I
chair their Publishing Committee. This takes an over-view of the Society's four
journals (the Quarterly Journal, Weather, International Journal of Climatology
and Meteorological Applications) as well as planning other initiative in the
field of publishing. At present, we are keeping a close eye on the development
of electronic publishing.
-
I am a member of the Committee for the
Dynamical Problems
Specialist group of
the Royal Meteorological Society. This plans 2 or 3 informal meetings each
year on burning topics in the subject.
-
I am President of the International Commission for Dynamical Meteorology
(ICDM) which sounds a good deal grander than it is. ICDM is a small group
which reports to the President of the International Association for
Meteorology and Atmospheric Science (IAMAS); its main job is to recommend
Symposia in dynamical topics for the biennial Assemblies of IAMAS.
-
I am Treasurer to the University Chaplaincy Centre. The
Chaplaincy
is an
ecumenical centre which aims to provide a place for people to meet and
relax in the centre of the Campus, and also to provide a base from which
the Chaplains can work.
