Making the flux adjustment ancillary file

Having created a netcdf file with the 12 monthly mean values of anomalous heat fluxes, this now needs to be converted to a UM ancillary file. This is slightly complicated by the fact that HadCM3 already uses flux adjustment for salinity, and the heat flux adjustments must be in the same file as the salinity fluxes.

You must therefore go through a 2 stage process. The first stage is to convert your netcdf file into an ancillary of heat flux adjustments. The second stage is to join this file to a pre-existing ancillary of salinity flux adjustments which HadCM3 would be using anyway.

How you actually go about doing these tasks will depend on the tools available to you locally. At CGAM, Jeff Cole has developed a number of tools for manipulating ancillary files and verious people have adapted these tools for specific uses over the years. At the time of writing, Jeff is developing an ancillary file creation GUI which looks and works much like XCONV, but this is still at a very early stage.

You will however need to find the salinity flux file that your coupled run is already using. Its probably called waterfix.ancil, but might be something different. To find out what its called and where it lives, go to the flux correction section of the ocean model in the UMUI and click on the ANCIL button. waterfix.ancil will probably only contain a single value of salinity flux which is used throughout the run. However, my experience was that if monthly values of heat flux are specified, the UM also wants to see monthly values of salinity flux in the same ancillary file, even if they're never used. To make life even more complicated the 2 different fields need to be interleaved. Once again, how you actually go about doing this will depend on the tools available to you locally.

Finally, follow the "set up job" link on the left hand side to find out how to set up your model run.
