Setting up SST a run of the regionally coupled UM

Now that you have generated a file of Haney forcing coefficients you can set up your model run using the UM User Interface. Do this as you would normally do but with 4 differences.

    1. Select "Haney forcing of temperature and salinity only" in the Ocean GCM > scientific parameters and sections > surface forcing > Haney Forcing window. You will need to provide a relaxation coefficient for surface temperature. This value will be over-ridden by your own specified values but you have to enter something - the UMUI will prompt you to enter a value if you leave it blank. Put 1000 W per m**2 per K.

    2. You must also specify the ancillary file with the SST values that you want to prescribe to the model. Do this in the Ocean GCM > input files > climatologies and potential climatologies > reference SST, SSS, air-temp and ice-depth window. Your file should be in the standard UM SST ancillary format and should also include salinity values. The salinity will not be used by the model when it runs but it does still need to be in the file - the model will look for values and fall over if they aren't there.

    3. Put the text file of Haney forcing coefficients you generated with the make_haney_coeffs.f script into a directory on the machine on which you are running the UM.

    4. Include the code modification set haney.mod in your list of modifications to the model. This is the piece of code that over-rides the UMUI specified value of the Haney forcing coefficient. It also switches off Haney forcing of salinity. You must also modify your copy of this modset so that it points to your own file of Haney forcing coefficients. The reference to this file occurs at the OPEN(UNIT=55...) statement about halfway down the code. Specify the complete path for the file.

Having done hese things you can now submit your model run in the usual way.
